How To Change A Flat Tire – Getting Down And Dirty (Pt. 2)

How to change a flat tire will be continued here. If you missed the beginning, you should read part one of this article.

How to change a flat tire: Get loose, then pry and jack

Before you continue this tutorial on how to change a flat tire, make sure your vehicle is in park and the emergency break is set. After removing the hubcap, use your wrench to loosen the lug nuts holding the tire on. Brute force will be required but you can use the spray lubricant on the nuts to help. Be careful not to remove the nuts yet though.

If you have them, place wooden blocks to secure the other tires. Now you’re ready to use your jack to elevate the frame of the car off the ground just enough so that the flat tire can be removed and the new tire can be attached. Elevation can only be achieved with the jack that comes with the car when cranking it in a clockwise motion. If you have a pneumatic foot jack, your job is easier in that you will only need to pump it with your foot or hands rather than using full-on elbow grease. Try to find the thickest, flattest possible metal surface on the underside of the car body near the wheel well of the flat tire. That’s the metal surface where you want your jack to be lifted up, in an area where it is least likely to slip and drop the car on top of you.

Liftoff and removal

You have elevated the flat tire and are ready for removal now. Use the tire iron to remove the lug nuts. After loosening them, the tire will be off the ground and it should be easy. Set the nuts somewhere they won’t roll away. While facing the wheel, remove the flat tire by pulling it straight toward you. Take your inflated spare now, match the empty holes in the wheel with the exposed wheel bolts and then slide it on. If you are having a hard time lining it up, try to balance it on your foot while getting it into the position.

Getting back to the nuts

With the spare on, put the lug nuts on by hand until they are snug. You will end up tightening them further with the tire iron. Next, use the tire iron to lower the jack so that the vehicle rests safely on the pavement once more. Remove the jack and tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron. Don’t kill yourself tightening them as much as possible, although may want to get them as tight as you can. Get cleaned up after putting away the tools and you are ready to go!

THE FINAL NOTE: If the spare you’ve put on your vehicle is a small-sized temporary spare, do not drive any faster than 50 mph, and try to get a new, full-sized replacement spare as soon as you’re able to.
